Hello and welcome to the Embark Therapy UK blog! I'm Piers Wilson, a Person-Centred Psychotherapist based in Central London and North London, and I'm delighted to invite you into this space where we can explore important topics surrounding mental health and well-being, therapy, and personal growth.
In this blog, I aim to create a resource that reflects the values and principles I hold in my practice. My approach is rooted in the Person-Centred Approach (PCA), a way of working that honours each individual’s unique experience and values the therapeutic relationship as the core of healing.
As part of my work, I integrate scientific insights such as Polyvagal Theory and somatic (embodied) awareness, acknowledging the importance of the body and nervous system in processing trauma and emotional experiences. I believe that distress is often stored not just in our minds, but within our bodies, and my work is about creating the safety necessary to connect with those experiences.
This blog will be a space to discuss the theory and practice of therapy in a way that remains non-pathologising and empowering. Whether we’re talking about trauma, anxiety, neurodiversity, or working with people who experience different realities, my goal is to present a compassionate, human-centred approach to well-being—one that goes beyond symptom-based treatments, focusing instead on helping people make sense of their experiences in a way that feels helpful to them.
Here, I'll be sharing Links, thoughts and reflections on topics that align with my approach—spanning areas like self-development, trauma, and new ways to understand and support those with challenges, including individuals experiencing different realities such as voice-hearing or those on a psychosis spectrum. I aim to offer insights that are anchored in both theory and lived experience, ensuring that every post is useful and relevant for readers who may be searching for a more holistic (no less scientific) way of understanding their relationship to themselves, the way they move through the world, and relate with others.
What to Expect from This Blog:
In the coming posts, I'll be exploring topics like:
How trauma affects the body and how therapy and other activities can help reconnect mind and body for healing.
Polyvagal Theory and its implications for creating safety in the therapeutic space.
The power of empathy, right-brain-to-right-brain attunement, and how they deepen therapeutic relationships.
Why a non-pathologising approach matters, and how frameworks like the Power Threat Meaning Model (2018) challenge traditional psychiatric perspectives.
Working with dissociative processes and psychosis in ways that respect the lived realities of those who experience them.
Whether you're curious about the theories or simply looking for insights to enhance your wellbeing, this blog is here to provide thoughtful reflections and practical takeaways. I aim to write with both depth and accessibility, so that everyone can find something valuable.
While this blog might not be updated regularly (since I dedicate most of my time to working in private practice, within the NHS, or engaging in ongoing professional development), I hope that each post will offer something of value—whether it's a fresh perspective on mental health and well-being, practical insights, or simply food for thought.
Thank you for joining me here, and I look forward to sharing this journey with you.
Warmly,
Piers Wilson
